Motorists will soon be seeing more Intelligent Road Studs (IRS) on road junctions. This initiative is part of LTA's effort to enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
Intelligent Road Studs Extended to More Locations
In October 2005, LTA installed IRS and/or "Give Way to Pedestrian" mandatory signs at two signalised junctions in Toa Payoh. This was part of a three-month trial to gauge the public's reaction to the use of IRS on the roads. During the trial, LTA sought the public's feedback through on-site surveys and via LTA's online consultation portal Talk2LTA.
Majority of interviewees viewed IRS favourably. 69% felt that the junctions with IRS are safer for pedestrians and motorists than junctions without. 81% agreed that IRS has enhanced safety for the elderly, less mobile and the children. Following the success of the trial, LTA has extended IRS to 21 locations. IRS is warranted based on the following criteria. 1) Right-turning motorists failing to give way to pedestrians are common at these locations over the past three years. 2) Pedestrian flow is substantial throughout the day as these locations are near MRT stations, bus interchanges, markets and food centres.
