The Central Expressway (CTE) serves as an important strategic road link between the city and the North and Northeast regions of Singapore. Currently, it is heavily utilised as it provides access to a few towns such as Ang Mo Kio, Hougang, Sengkang, Punggol, Yishun, Sembawang and Woodlands.
Today, CTE is operating at full capacity and traffic demand of CTE is expected to increase as these towns develop further in the next 10 to 15 years. As such, the widening works along CTE will help to alleviate the current traffic congestion and to meet the anticipated increase in traffic demand. Current Condition
Scope of WorksThe widening works for CTE between Bukit Timah Road and Yio Chu Kang Road started in 1st quarter of 2009 and is scheduled for completion by 4th quarter of 2011. It involves:
For the widening works between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, the works commenced in 1st quarter of 2008 and was completed in 4th quarter of 2009 including the reconstruction of one covered pedestrian overhead bridge with linkways.
Structure Widening
Benefits
Relocation of ERP Gantries Affected by Road WorksAs part of the CTE widening works, the LTA has relocated three Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries to facilitate road widening works carried out in phases along the CTE.
As with all other ERP relocation, the relocated gantries come into operation after the existing gantry has been decommissioned. Relocation of Gantry along Northbound CTE The gantry along CTE (northbound) between Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) and Braddell Road, which operates from 6pm to 8pm on weekdays, has been relocated to two locations since 6 May 2010. One on the slip road from PIE into CTE (northbound) and another about 300m upstream along CTE (northbound) from the current gantry. Relocation of Gantry along Southbound CTE (Between PIE and Braddell Road) The gantry along CTE (southbound) between PIE and Braddell Road has been relocated to about 300m downstream from the current gantry on 13 December 2010. Relocation of Gantry along Southbound CTE (Between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Braddell Road) The gantry along CTE (southbound) between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Braddell Road has been relocated to about 800m downstream from the current gantry. The relocation works and switchover was completed on 25 July 2011.
Completed Widening of CTE to Dual 4-Lane CarriagewayThe widening works for CTE between Bukit Timah Road and Yio Chu Kang were carried out in stages, and conversion of the 3-lane carriageway to 4-lane carriageway along both bounds of CTE have been completed progressively between March and November 2011.
The slip road flyover from CTE (SLE) to PIE (Changi) was also widened from single lane to two lanes on 5 November 2011. Braddell Road junction was upgraded from a 4-phase junction to a 3-phase junction to cut down waiting time at the junction. Under this project, six pedestrian overhead bridges spanning across the CTE have also been upgraded with covered ramps to provide barrier-free access for the elderly and less-mobile. Opening of New Flyovers and Slip RoadsAs part of the CTE widening works, 2 new flyovers between Braddell Flyover and PIE will be opened to provide seamless travelling.
New Flyover along CTE (City) - Opened on 3 December 2011 Motorists using CTE (City bound) to travel to PIE (Changi)/Upper Serangoon will need to enter the flyover via a new Exit 8B that is about 800m before the existing exit and is located just after Exit 10 into Braddell Road Junction. The existing exit 8B will be closed with the opening of the flyover. For motorists entering the CTE (City bound) from Braddell Road to travel to PIE (Changi)/Upper Serangoon, they will need to keep left and enter the new road after they turn into the slip road leading to the main CTE. Traffic Movement for CTE (City-Bound) New Flyover along CTE (SLE/TPE) - Open on 17 December 2011 Motorists exiting from CTE (SLE bound) to Braddell Road will need to exit via a new slip road (new exit 10) that is about 200m before the existing exit and located under the new flyover. The existing exit 10 will be closed with the changes in traffic scheme. Traffic Movement for CTE (SLE Bound) Directional and information signs will be placed well in advance to inform and guide motorists to use the new flyovers and exits. Motorists are advised to drive carefully and to follow the directional signs displayed. Site Photos
