Steps to take when you're involved in a road accident: - Keep calm. If you are calm, you can assess the situation much better.
- Give first aid to the injured if you are trained or can render help in any way without exposing yourself to danger.
- Switch on the flashing hazard lights of your vehicle and place the standard triangular warning sign at least 20 metres behind your vehicle.
- Find a safe spot away from the vehicle to wait for help.
- Call the police if someone is injured, or the accident involves a foreign vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist.
- Move the vehicle to the side of the road if no one is injured.
- For insurance claims, write down the other party's contact details, car registration number and insurance company. If there is an independent witness, note that person's particulars. If you have a camera on hand, take pictures of the damage.
- If the other party admits that the accident was due to his negligence or misjudgment, write down the admission and get the other party to sign. You retain the note for submission together with your report.
- Make a report to your insurance company as soon as possible. For non-injury accidents when the police are not called, you need only lodge a Non-Injury Motor Accidents Report Form with the insurance company.
